Mathematics is not only a subject in school that gives many people headaches. Nor is it a bunch of numbers, which are there without order or law.

Mathematics is a special world in which some completely different laws rules – De Morgan’s laws, Pythagorean theorem, laws of algebra, tautology etc.

Walking with me in this dense traffic of numbers and operations, rules and tricks to get to the goal easier, I promise that you will love mathematics at least 10% as much as I do!

The square of the length of the hypotenuse is congruent to the sum of the squares of the lengths of the legs.

c2 = a2 + b2

There is a “shortcut” for almost every operation in mathematics. In this session I will only reveal a few, but as I develop my blog pages and expand my horizons, you will be able to dive into this magical world of mathematics with me and discover tricks for “easy math”.

# Dividing by the number 5

The easy method to divide a number by 5 is to multiply the number by 2 and then move the decimal point one place to the left (reduce one decimal place).

Example:
Divide 85 by 5.

Step 1: Multiply 85 by 2
85 × 2 = 170

Step 2: Move the decimal point one place to the left
170 → 17.0

So, 85 ÷ 5 = 17

This method works because dividing by 5 is the same as multiplying by 2 and then dividing by 10 (which is moving the decimal point one place to the left).

#Multiplying by the Number 5

An easy way to multiply a number by 10 is to divide the number by 2 and then add a zero at the end of the result. This method works well when the number is even. For example, to multiply 14 by 10:

  • Divide 14 by 2, which equals 7
  • Add a zero to 7, making it 70
    So, 14 × 10 = 140

Note: This trick is a simplified way to understand multiplication by 10 using halving and place value, but for odd numbers, it’s best to multiply directly or use other methods.

# Easy Squaring

Squaring a double-digit number can be made simple using a special rule. Here’s how it works:

  • Square the first digit.
  • Multiply 2 by the first digit and the second digit.
  • Square the second digit.
  • Combine these results to get the final answer.

Let’s take the number 32 as an example:

  • First digit: 3
  • Second digit: 2

Step 1: Square the first digit
3² = 9

Step 2: Multiply 2 by the first digit and the second digit
2 × 3 × 2 = 12

Step 3: Square the second digit
2² = 4

Now, combine these results:

  • The first part is 9 (from step 1)
  • The middle part is 12 (from step 2)
  • The last part is 4 (from step 3)

Since the middle part (12) is a two-digit number, we add the 1 to the first part:
9 + 1 = 10

So, the final answer is:
10 (adjusted first part) | 2 (remaining from 12) | 4

Which gives 1024.

Therefore, 32 squared is 1024.

# Percentage tricks

To quickly calculate 30% of 50, multiply the first digits 3 and 5, then add a zero:

3 × 5 = 15
Add a zero → 150

Now, since you were calculating a percentage, divide 150 by 10 to get the correct value:

150 ÷ 10 = 15

So, 30% of 50 is 15.

CONCLUSION

All in all, now that you’ve just peeked beneath the surface, you see that there are countless crazy, fascinating, astonishing, clever, and fantastic tricks to solve any math problem.
